MDCPS ITS – promoting student achievement thru efficient and effective technologies
The Information Technology Services Department (ITS) at Miami-Dade County Public Schools supports the fifth largest school district in the United States.
Introduction
In support of its strategic plan to improve service quality and reduce costs, the Enterprise Service Management Team is tasked with processing hundreds of requisitions and thousands of invoices per year on behalf of the School District's Information Technology Services Department.
Complementing the district's ERP system is a due-diligence, research, and approval workflow database, where current as well as historical procurement information dating back decades is maintained.
Challenge
The Enterprise Service Management (ESM) Team within the School District's ITS Department presented us with a significant challenge: preserve 20+ years of data from a legacy RDBMS procurement application (whose functionality was about to sunset) while implementing an updated architecture with rigorous data integrity and access controls.
Prior to our involvement, ESM's legacy application consisted of multiple database files, each with their own UI, stored procedures, and access controls. The application dated back to the late 90's and would no longer run natively on modern Windows clients.
Solution
Automation USA LLC developed and deployed a modern on-premise client/server solution based on the Claris FileMaker platform and successfully transferred all legacy data into the new system, consolidating all database files under a single application.
Result
Enterprise Service Management's newly designed application leverages Active Directory authentication for a seamless Windows Single Sign On experience with multi-tiered security access controls. Alongside a modern user interface, many core application essentials were implemented such as database transactional integrity, referential integrity, a modular design, and source-code control.
